Aurora's group's results will be verified by asking them to evaluate this expression:
What should they get?
Name the operation for each symbol. Think about this carefully.
Carefully and concisely, write your explanation of how you figured it out, use these capital letters to substitute for the symbols:
- the heart is H
- the star is S
- the raindrop is R
- the lightening bolt is L
- the bull's-eye is B
There was really only one way I saw that you approached Anh's Code and that was to start by trying to figure out which operation stood for which figure. Once you figured out that the fifth operation was "exponentiation" then you could find the answer to the expression. The difficult part was in explaining your thinking regarding how you found the operation! Most of you stated you used trial and error. Many of you put equations as proof of your solution however this did not explain how you found the matching operation to the given symbols.
The code is:
(The symbols used are the conventional symbols used on a computer to express the operation indicated.)
Heart = (+) or addition
Raindrop = (-) or subtraction
Bulls Eye = (*) or multiplication
Star = (/) or division
Lightning Bolt = (^) or exponents
After solving the final equation, using order of operation, your solution should have been 13.

ReplyDeleteWe replaced the symbols for the code to find out what each one meant and got the following…
H= Addition
S= Division
R= Subtraction
L= Exponents
B Multiplication
When we went to solve the final problem we replaced all of the symbols in the code and used the order of operations to solve. We used the following steps…
1. 2 to the power of 3/(4(3)-10)+6 to the power of 2(4+1)/(1 to the power of 4(20))
2. 2 to the power of 3/(2)+6 to the power of 2(5)/(20)
3. 8/(2)+36(5)/(20)
4. 4+9
When we were done we got the answer of 13.

2. 2 to the power of 3/(2)+6 to the power of 2(5)/ (20)
3. 8/(2)+36(5)/(20)

Answer: 13
We used the code to solve the problem, first we changed the symbols with the math signs, and then we followed the order of operations and got 13 as the answer.

ReplyDeleteThe answer I got was;
H= Addition
R= Subtraction
S= Division
B= Multiplication
L= Exponents
I got this answer by plugging in operations and seeing if they work in the problem if they did I tried the operation on another problem that had that letter and if I got the correct answer then I knew that it was the right operation. The answer to 2 to the power of 3/ (4 X 3- 10) + 6 to the power of 2 X ( 4 + 1)/( 1 to the power of 4X 20) is 13.

I got these answers by using the process of trial and error. One example of how my codes work is for the problem (5+40)/3=15. For the rest of the problems the codes worked and we were able to correspond the answers with the answers given correctly. The answer to the huge, final problem is 13. I got that answer by using the same method and by following the correct process for order of operation.

The first thing I did was analyze the problems. Then I used trial and error with each operation until I got the right answer. The first problem I solved easily and I found some variables. I used the variables from the first problem and applied the variables to the second. The last problem was the hardest. I thought it was an inequality at first but that made no sense so it thought exponent and it could work but I got the wrong answer. So I thought it could have been a negative sign so I tried it on paper and it worked out. However, Ms.L told me that that was incorrect. Then I thought of all the operations we went over the first week of school and I thought of exponents again. I worked it out but this time I tried it with all the different variables and I figured out that the lighting bolt was the fit for exponents.

ReplyDeleteFirst thing I did was use Trial and Error to find out the first problem’s mystery operations. I found out that the Heart is really the Addition sign and the Star is really the division sign. Then, I plugged in the operations that I found out in the first problem in the second problem and, again, used Trial and Error. Then, I found out that the Lightning Bolt is really the exponent sign. The only mystery operation left was the Bull’s Eye. First, I plugged it in with the multiplication sign and it turns out that the Bull’s Eye was just that!
Heart = Addition
Star = Division
Raindrop = Subtraction
Lightning Bolt = Exponent
Bull’s Eye = Multiplication
The next thing I did was plug in all the solved operations in Aurora’s group’s expression. This is what I got…
2^3/(4*3-10)+6^2*(4+1)/(1^4*20)
2^3/2+6^2*5/20
8/2+36*5/20
4+36*5/20
4+180/20
4+9=13
The answer is 13. I figured this out by reading left to right using the Order of Operations!!!

ReplyDeleteThe first thing I did was replaced the symbols, (heart, star, raindrop, lightning bolts, bulls-eye)
For the first problem I solved between the parentheses, five plus forty equals forty-five.
Then I divided forty-five by three and got my answer of fifteen.
For the second problem, I first solved between the parentheses, fourteen divided by two which gave seven.
Then I subtracted five from seven and it equaled two.
Finally I did two^ two and it gave me the answer of four.
The last problem, I solved between the parenthesis and subtracted six from four-teen and I got eight.
Then I started from the beginning (left to right) and multiplied four by eight and it equaled thirty-two.
Finally I multiplied thirty-two by two and got my answer of sixty-four.

First I wrote out all the problems with the correct operations. Then I broke the first problem into two parts. The two parts were addition and division and added forty and five within the parenthesis and got forty-five then I divided it by three and got fifteen and matched it up with the problem’s answer and they were the same.
So I moved on to the second problem; and broke it into three parts. The three parts were division, subtraction, and addition. First I divided fourteen and two within the parentheses and got seven.

For the first problem (5H40) S3=15, I substituted the H with a + and the S with a / or division sign, and the equation was right. So, H is addition and S is division. So the equation is (5 + 40)/3 = 15.
For the second problem, I knew S was already division, so I just needed to figure out what R and L were.I tried the R with multiplication, but the answer was way off. So, I tried subtraction. Since multiplication was the only one left, I guessed L was multiplication. Combined with R, I got the whole equation right.
So the equation is (14 / 2 – 5) x 2 = 4.
For the third problem, I used process of elimination and took a shot with B being an exponent. But the answer was higher than 64. So I tried B with it being a negative number, and the answer worked!
The equation is 4x – (8) x-2!
Since I got every one, the final problem was rewritten to:
2 x 3 /(4 x -3 – 10) + 6 x 2 x –(4 + 1) / (1 x 4 x -20).
And for the answer I got -180.
So -180 is the answer to the final problem, including using the order of operations
